Turning seventeen years old and just getting my license was an extremely exciting time for me and maybe for most of you! I was so happy to be able to get onto the road and start driving, being able to go where I want, and having complete freedom. My parents and I had to do a lot of thinking as to what car would be the most cost efficient for me, especially when factoring in car insurance.

Car insurance is an intimidating endeavor to make, whether that’s choosing an insurance provider or remembering as a young adult to make that payment every month. Advice that I would give for any first time driver is to shop around at different insurance providers. Researching different providers can be as simple as Googling “car insurance for first time drivers”, and you’ll receive multiple results. While looking through different providers, it is important to start a quote process so you are able to see what company has the best rates. Filling out quotes from different companies will help you compare and contrast to help determine the best fit for you.

During this quote process, you’ll be asked many questions about basic information and what coverages you will need for your car. It’s best to be truthful in your answers as there are severe penalties for insurance fraud, where coverage may not be granted if it is determined that you significantly lied on your application. This is an intimidating process, and I know this first hand because I had no idea what the right amount of coverage would be for my car. Finding the right amount of coverage can be done over the computer or a smartphone, but speaking to an insurance agent can help you determine the appropriate amount of coverage needed for you. We don’t want to be underinsured in case something happens, but at the same time paying for unnecessary coverage on a monthly basis is a financial burden. There is so much information and so many decisions that come with choosing auto insurance coverage.

As we all know, adding another bill is a frustrating thing, which is why asking for any discounts could be beneficial to reducing your monthly cost. There are many car insurance companies that offer discounts to help your monthly payments. Many insurance companies will provide a discount to a good student, someone with multiple policies within the same company, someone purchasing a new car, referring family and friends, and being a safe driver. Finding certain discounts that apply to you could be beneficial in helping find the best provider!
